There are 6-8 hollow tubes in the false floor of the pot. These tubes are open at the lower end and sitting in water. You create wicks by pushing potting mix into the tubes so the water is drawn up to the plants by capillary action. The roots of the plants then pull the water up to the plants at the rate that they require water.
